Riccaboni's Autographs

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions everybody has, but sometimes don't like to ask.

Q1. Should I hand-write my letter or type it?

A1. Hand-writing letters, to me, seems more genuine rather than a typed letter which can be printed at a frequency much greater than a handwritten piece. Players like Todd Jones, in an ESPN interview, have said they prefer handwritten letters, as well.

Q2. Should it be long or short?

A2. Again, this is completely your call. I like to keep my short, although to retired personalities like Harry Kalas and John Wooden, my letters have gotten longer. Whatever the length, don't forget the easy stuff, like saying please and thank you, and always addressing the player using Mr., Mrs., or Ms.

Q3. Ok, so I wrote a letter to my favorite player. Now what do I do?

A3. First, locate the address of the team or the player. For retired players, I do a Google search. There are pay services out there, but they really aren't necessairy. Also, if a player is in the Hall of Fame, a lot of times you can reach them by sending to them c/o their respective Hall of Fame. Next, prepare your self-addressed stamped envelope. I fold the SASE in half, put the letter in the card in between it and stick it in the envelop to be mailed to the player.

Q4. Can I send memorobilia to be signed?

A4. This is not something I do, but I heard things like photos, mini helmets, balls, among other things can be willingly signed through the mail by manyplayers. Again, I would recommend a Google search to see which players are most likely to do this before you send off something, especially you'll want to see again, signed or unsigned. Be sure to always include a way of mailing the memorobilia back with proper postage.

Q5. I don't have a card of the player I want to write to but would love their autograph. What do I do?

A5. For my broadcaster set I'm trying to put together, I send index cards. They look neat framed and gives it an old time feel.

Q6. How many cards should I send?

A6. I usually only send one out of personal preference, but sometimes I'll send two and suggest the player keep one. I know most players will sign both, but sometimes they will keep one, which, in my opinion, is even cooler. Jesse Crain did this to me and I know Jack Wilson of the Pirates is notorious for this. I suggest sending no more than three things to be autographed.
