Johnny was a twelfth-round draft pick of the Houston Astros in 1979 out of the University of Arkansas. Ray would finish second in the 1982 Rookie of the Year balloting behind Steve Sax. In 1983, Ray would win the National League Silver Slugger award at second base. A mid-season, 1987 trade sent Ray to the Angels for Miguel Garcia. Ray would make his only All-Star appearance as a member of the Angels in 1988 before retiring after the 1990 season.
