Paul was drafted in the twelfth round of the 1989 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Illinois State. He would play six seasons for the Pirates before a 1997 mid-season trade would send him to Milwaukee. He would stay in Milwaukee until after the 1998 season, when he would sign with Cleveland. He had a career 29-45 record with a 4.83 ERA over eight years.
