From the University of Lousiana at Monroe, Mathews was drafted in the fifth round of the 1987 draft by the Texas Rangers and would make his Major League debut with the club on June, 21 1991, tossing 1/3 of an inning. He would post a 4-0 record, with one save, in 1991, with a 3.61 ERA. Pretty consistant reliever over his eight year Major League relief career, posting a 22-21 record with ten saves and a 4.25 ERA. Pitched mostly in the American League, with a layover in Florida being his only appearance in the National League. Was traded to Baltimore straight-up for Greg Zaunn on August 21, 1996. One of the better hitting relievers, carrying a staggering .375 career average in 24 career at-bats. Retired after the 1999 season, last pitching for the Kansas City Royals.
