Keith was an eleventh round pick of the Cincinatti Reds in the 1986 draft out of Oral Roberts University. He made his Major League debut at age 29 on April 5, 1994 with the San Diego Padres. Lockhart played for ten seasons with three teams as a utility infielder, hitting .261 with 44 homeruns.
